Nashville-based alternative pop trio Nightly made a stop at Paradise Rock Club with support from artists Brooke Alex and Will Linley.

The now independent band, whose name originated from a text abbreviation for “night, love you,” consists of lead singer Jonathan Capeci, drummer Nicholas Sainato, and guitarist Joey Beretta. The boys started the band circa 2016 after years of Capeci and Beretta playing music together and the addition of Sainato to the mix. During Nightly’s early years, the three released their first EP, Honest, through Interscope Records. Fast forward to October of 2020, their debut album night, love you was born, including tracks like “the movies,” “mess in my head,” and “older.” Three years later, the group released their second album, wear your heart out, which further encapsulated their knack for producing catchy, love-focused pop music that one may say is good music to drive to…

Their stop in Boston was the eighth show of their current U.S. tour, taking place upon the release of their newest album, songs to drive to. Thursday night, the band performed a good mix of new and old tracks, as well as some surprise covers that had the crowd singing their hearts out. We got to hear something from each album, including some of their most popular songs: “MESS,” “gas station cowboy hats,” “tv shows,” and “hate my favorite band.” In the middle of the set, Capeci brought out an acoustic guitar with the intention of showing us what a true Nashville music moment looks like—when things aren’t planned to a tee and musicians just get together and jam. The crowd had to make a choice between two songs, “Younger” and “No Vacancy,” for them to play. The latter won, but the boys played both for us anyway, showing their love for their fans.

One of the most unexpected moments of the night was when Capeci had Beretta and Sainato hop up on the platforms on the stage, leading the left and right sides of the venue in a sing-off of the word “some.” Once he had the entire crowd sing it together and the music started playing, we knew what we were in for. That’s right, a cover of “All Star” by the band Smash Mouth. Fans smiled and sang the tune at the top of their lungs while the boys jammed out and danced around the stage. Earlier in the night, they covered “Kiss Me” by Sixpence None the Richer, and we got a little hint of Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” as well.

The night came to a close as the band sent us off with two of their top songs—the first being “Twenty Something,” with over 26 million streams on Spotify, and the last, “where do we go from here,” a track off of their new album. This left the crowd in their feels and wishing the night wasn’t about to end.

At one point, Capeci mentioned to the crowd that they had been looking forward to playing in Boston again since they last played the venue in 2022, stating that they really like it here and the crowd is always a good time. Sounds like there is no doubt that they will return in the future!

Go check out their album, songs to drive to!
